Home Schedule of Events Employer Challenge Celebrate Cycling Bike Festival

May 3 -10 has been designated as Tallahassee-Leon County Bike Week – an opportunity to celebrate bicycling and the numerous reasons to ride. Whether you bike to work or school to save money or time, to preserve your health or the environment; to explore your community or get to your destination, Bike Week is a perfect time to experience how cycling benefits you and your community.

Bicycling, whether you do it for work, school, or recreation, offers many benefits. Here is just a sampling.

A BETTER BODY — More than 60% of Americans are overweight or obese, and rates of obesity-related diseases such as diabetes are soaring. Riding your bike to work eliminates the need to go to the gym, and riding just 3 hours a week can slash your risk of heart disease and stroke in half. Be sure to consult your doctor whenever starting any new physical activity though. (Source: League of American Bicyclists)

MORE MONEY — The average annual cost of owning and operating an automobile is $6500  or more depending on where you live and how much you drive (Source:  AAA). The cost of riding and maintaining a bicycle is about $300 a year. That’s a pretty significant savings, especially as gas prices continue to rise.

CLEANER AIR — Motorized vehicles account for approximately 70% of the carbon monoxide released into the air. Riding a bike is a simple way to reduce that number and improve air quality. (Source: League of American Bicyclists)
